Ryan Reynolds, known for playing Deadpool in the movies, has just unveiled the project he proposed to Disney for the Star Wars franchise, and the least we can say is that his idea is bold.
After Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has a new idea for Star Wars
The Star Wars universe has continued to expand since its creation by George Lucas. With Disney+, fans of the intergalactic saga have been treated to several spin-off series. The next film to be released in theaters will be The Mandalorian & Grogu and will be played by Pedro Pascal. We also know that a new film has been announced by the studio with Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, who is preparing Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling in the cast.
As a guest on Scott Mendelson's The Box Office podcast, Ryan Reynolds discussed a project idea for the Star Wars franchise that he proposed to Disney: that of making a film in this universe that is rated R, namely a production for which minors under 17 years of age are required to be accompanied by an adult. The actor explains:
I suggested to Disney: why not make a R-rated Star Wars movie? It's not necessary to highlight the main characters. There's a wide range of characters you could use.
A R-rated Star Wars movie for deep and emotional stories
And Ryan Reynolds' idea of making a R-rated Star Wars movie isn't just to offer content that's vulgar or violent. According to him, with this classification, it would be a great way to stage deeper stories with more emotion:
The R rating is a Trojan horse for stirring up emotion. I always wonder why studios don't want to bet on this kind of thing.
The actor and producer also emphasized that if this project were to see the light of day, he would not want to star in it believing it would not be a good fit for him.
For now, Disney has not commented on the possibility of putting an R-rated Star Wars film on track. If this were the case, then it would be unprecedented in the history of the franchise. If Ryan Reynolds' idea were to come to fruition, it would open the door to new types of stories. Maybe one day we'll have the chance to see such a production with, who knows, Ryan Reynolds behind the camera... Only time will tell!
