Star Wars: Unlikely, this Jedi fell madly in love with a Sith

With the recent release of the series Tales of the Underworld on Disney+, a former Jedi is making headlines again. Enough to make you want to take a look at the character, and see that he broke the Jedi rules by falling in love with a Sith.

Who is Quinlan Vos?

Less well-known than Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or Master Yoda, Quinlan Vos is a Jedi Master from the planet Kiffu. Specializing in espionage for the galactic underworld, he appeared very briefly in a cameo in The Phantom Menace, serving as a liaison until the arrival of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, tasked with protecting Queen Amidala. He reappears in an episode of the third season of The Clone Wars, during which he accompanies Obi-Wan on a mission destined to hunt down a Hutt. During the proclamation and execution of Order 66, he was supposed to disappear with the vast majority of the other Jedi.

Nothing very notable, then, until episode 3 of the live-action series dedicated to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Helped by Tala, an Imperial (played by Indira Varma; Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones) to leave the planet Mapuzo, Obi-Wan learns that Quinlan Vos also survived Order 66 (as did Ahsoka Tano, Kanan Jarrus). He learns this thanks to a mysterious text inscription. Information confirmed by Tala : "Yes, he helps us from time to time by moving novices from one planet to another." The creator of a network known as The Hidden Path, intended to help exiled Jedi and protect young Force-sensitives. A symbol of the clandestine resistance after Order 66, we do not know what happened to him after the fall of the Empire, leaving the door open to new intrigues about him.

On the other hand, the novel The Dark Disciple tells us more about this Jedi with unorthodox methods and his penchant for the dark side of the Force (which greatly worried the Jedi Council at the time). Tasked to eliminate Count Dooku (a mistake) with the help of Asajj Ventress, a former Sith and bounty hunter seeking revenge against the Count, they fall in love during the mission. Vos is then captured by Dooku, psychologically tortured, before falling under his influence and turning to the dark side. Having become Count Dooku's apprentice, he is finally saved by Asajj, who sacrifices herself. Back on the right path, he spares the one also known as Darth Tyrannus.

The new animated series Tales of the Underworld, which gives three episodes to Asajj Venrtress, began its story where that of The Dark Disciple left off: with the funeral of the former Sith. Obi-Wan and Quinlan Vos travel to Dathomir to place her body in the traditional burial pools of the Nightsisters. After their departure, the spirit of Mother Talzin offers Ventress a second chance, which brings her back to life. As fans know, Asajj Ventress is resurrected thanks to the dark magic of the Nightsisters.

Both the novel The Dark Disciple and Tales of the Underworld are important for understanding the psychology of Quinlan Vos. Regularly at odds with certain Jedi dogmas, he broke their code by falling in love. A forbidden feeling among defenders of the Republic. Attachment carries the risk of falling to the dark side of the Force. The best example is Anakin Skywalker, who, in wanting to save his wife Padmé, embraced Palpatine's ideals and fell into anger and hatred. Kanan Jarrus, another Jedi to fall in love (with Hera Syndulla) in the series Rebels, on the other hand, managed to maintain a more discreet, yet deep relationship, since they had a son, Jacen, seen in season 1 of Ahsoka
