Good news for science fiction and strategy fans: Stellaris is completely free on Steam until tonight at 5:00 PM. If you missed the entire weekend, don't panic, you still have a little time to dive into the fascinating world of this galactic management game by Paradox Interactive. If you've never tried it, now's the perfect time to see why it's become a staple of the genre.
One of the richest galactic 4X games on Steam
Released in 2016 on Steam, Stellaris has carved out a niche for itself in the strategy game landscape. Halfway between 4X (exploration, expansion, exploitation, extermination) and grand strategy, the game puts you in charge of a rapidly expanding interstellar civilization. You will have to manage your resources, explore space, negotiate (or wage war) with other empires, and above all face dynamic events that can upset the balance of your galaxy.
All this takes place in real time with pause, on a procedurally generated star map, making each game unique. And as is often the case with Paradox, the depth of the game is immense. Diplomacy, domestic politics, technological evolution, customizable alien races, ethical doctrines... it's all there.
On the gameplay side, Stellaris shines with its multi-level management: management of planets (infrastructure, population, resources), scientific research, military fleets, internal politics, and relations with other empires. You can create alliances, join a galactic community like a space UN, or on the contrary impose your domination by force. It all depends on your playstyle.
Another free game to keep permanently, but the offer is limited
Second free game at the moment, Asterix & Obelix XXL Romastered, the remaster of a cult game for little Gauls that promises good laughs alone or with others. The game offers a whole host of activities, including new game modes specially designed for this new version. If the game is to be added to your Steam library, it's through Fanatical that you'll have to go. A platform accustomed to this kind of tempting offer. As usual with Fanatical, it's first-come, first-served, so you'll have to act quickly if you want to get your hands on the game and add it permanently to your Steam collection.
For those interested, here's what to do:
- Go to Fanatical
- Log in to your account or create one and link it to your Steam account
- Then go to this address to claim your free game
- Add it to your Steam collection
