Google is reportedly preparing to improve an often-overlooked aspect of its OLED displays. This change aims to reduce a subtle but potentially uncomfortable effect for some users. An evolution expected for several generations of Pixel.
High-end smartphones are increasingly focusing on display quality. OLED screens offer deep contrasts, high brightness, and vibrant colors. But not all panels are created equal, even among the most advanced models. Certain technical details can have a direct impact on daily usability, without us always knowing how to identify it.
This is the case with the PWM flicker rate, a method used to adjust the brightness of OLED screens. The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel 9a all use a 240 Hz rate. This figure remains significantly lower than that of many competing smartphones, particularly in China, which go up to 1920 Hz or more. As a result, some users experience eye strain and even headaches after prolonged use, especially at low brightness.
Google promises a screen that's kinder to the eyes starting this year
When asked about this by our colleagues at Android Central, Google hinted that a change would arrive sometime this year. Without directly mentioning the Pixel 10, a spokesperson confirmed that the teams were aware of the problem and were working on a solution. These could be new screens with a higher frequency, or a software option to reduce flicker, similar to what Motorola already offers. This would be the first time the company has officially addressed this problem.
As a reminder, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) works by flashing pixels very quickly to adjust brightness. The lower the rate, the more noticeable this flickering is, especially at low brightness. This phenomenon doesn't affect all users, but it's becoming an important factor for those who are sensitive to it. With the current frame rate of 240 Hz on the Pixel 9 range, Google is clearly lagging behind Chinese brands or even some competing high-end models. The Pixel 10 could therefore make up for this delay and offer significantly improved visual comfort.
