Apple is reportedly introducing new under-display Face ID technology with the iPhone 18 Pro generation, which would free up more display space. A punch-hole camera would, however, be present to maintain quality selfies and videos.
We already know that the iPhone 17 will bring significant changes in terms of design for the back of the device, now we have information on the next generation. According to the media outlet The Information, Apple is reportedly making a facelift on the display side of the iPhone 18 this time.
Neither notch nor Dynamic Island, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max would instead feature Face ID technology under the screen. Apple has been rumored to have such intentions for years, so they could materialize in 2026 on the highest-end iPhone models.
Face ID under the screen ready in 2026?
According to the same report, only the facial recognition sensors would be hidden under the screen. The camera used for selfies or video calls would be integrated into a punch-hole in the screen. This would be located in the upper left corner of the screen, a bit like what Samsung did with its Galaxy S10 at the time, but on the other side.
This feature would save display space without sacrificing the photo and video quality of the front sensor. Several manufacturers, including Samsung, have been trying to place the selfie camera under the screen for many years. But the latter obstructs the light, making the optics' performance particularly poor. We see this, for example, with the camera under the screen of the Galaxy Z Fold smartphones, which is close to useless because the resulting rendering is difficult to use.
Whether in hardware or software, Apple has invested a lot of effort in developing its Dynamic Island. Abandoning it so quickly may seem strange, so we take this information with a grain of salt. Face ID under the screen could also arrive on the foldable devices that Apple is due to launch next year. We're talking about one device in the iPad format, and another in the MacBook format.
