The Last of Us: Will there be a season 3?

Season 2 of The Last of Us is coming to an end soon. Next Monday, viewers will be able to discover the season finale, the one that threatens to shake things up for our characters. But as we prepare for a cliffhanger ending, we legitimately wonder: will there be a sequel planned?

The first piece of good news is that Season 3 was confirmed a few weeks ago. Showrunner Craig Mazin and HBO have officially announced the third batch of episodes, which should still cover the plot of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II. He says it should be longer than Season 2, which only has 7 episodes in total. As a reminder, season 1 contained 9.

For the moment, nothing has been confirmed by Craig Mazin or HBO, but based on the release schedule of this series, as well as the channel's other major productions, it's quite possible that we'll be treated to season 3 of The Last of Us within two years.

A season 4 coming?

The second piece of good news is that it seems that a season 4 is also on the agenda. As it stands, Craig Mazin doesn't see himself finishing telling Ellie's story in just three seasons. He told Collider in an interview:

A third game in the works?

The question now is: what will the plot of season 4 be if season 3 ends where The Last of Us Part II ended? The most popular theory among gamers is that a third game is in the works at Naughty Dog. Unfortunately, this information has never been confirmed and has sometimes even been almost refuted.

In any case, some believe that it would be impossible for the supposed third game to fit into one season, even though it took two seasons to cover the events of the second game. It is therefore entirely possible that Neil Druckmann will decide to finish his saga only in series format by offering us a completely new final season. But between now and then, a lot can happen.
