While Samsung is struggling to compete with Chinese folding smartphones on certain technical criteria, the Korean giant is reportedly preparing a response with its next models. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, as well as a brand new phone that folds in three, could introduce a thinner design thanks to the use of titanium, a material that is both light and robust, as well as new features regarding the stylus.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 wants to become the thinnest folding phone in the world

According to the Korean site TheElec, Samsung is considering integrating a titanium backplate on two of its next models: the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and a phone with a screen that folds in three, a first for the Korean brand. Unlike the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which uses titanium for its chassis, these future foldable devices will use it only for the plate located between the hinge and the screen.

The choice of titanium is not a first for Samsung. Indeed, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition already features it. This component, essential for ensuring the strength of the folding mechanism, has undergone several evolutions over the generations. After stainless steel on the first models, Samsung switched to carbon fiber on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to 5. Titanium, which is more complex to produce, offers greater rigidity while reducing weight, which allows for the design of thinner devices.

A new technology for the stylus, without a dedicated sensor

In this quest for thinness, Samsung would be ignoring the integrated stylus (S Pen) in the Z Fold 7. Removing the sensor needed to detect stylus movements is also being considered, to save a few precious millimeters. It would be replaced by technology directly integrated into the OLED screen that would allow interaction with a stylus (sold separately, therefore). This principle, already used by Apple, is based on a battery-powered stylus that transmits its position directly to the screen.

This could allow Samsung to eventually offer folding smartphones compatible with a stylus… without compromising on thickness. For now, it remains to be seen whether this technology will be ready in time for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, expected in the second half of 2025, and more precisely this summer.
