Another one. Since Amazon took control of MGM in 2023, countless films have been promised theatrical releases but relegated to event releases on Prime Video. These choices haven't always been to the liking of directors, who were promised worldwide distribution when they began production. This was the case for Doug Liman, director of Road House and one of the voices speaking out against the streaming giant's strategy. He boycotted the film's premiere and shared his displeasure in the press. More than a year after this story, another film that we imagined would be hitting theaters around the world will have to settle for Prime Video subscribers' TVs. At least, that's what Collider is saying.
According to the American media, Voltron in live-action will soon be available in the Prime Video catalog. Filming has just wrapped, but Prime Video has not yet decided to share a release date or first images. In fact, the details of the plot are still being kept secret. According to director Marshall Thurber, it will be a reinvention of the 80s cartoon with new pilots and new stakes. He did, however, promise that his proposal would be "faithful to the iconic elements". Launched in 1984 by World Events Productions, it focused on space explorers who piloted a giant super robot called Voltron. A reboot was also offered in 2016 on Netflix: Legendary Defender delivered 78 episodes over 8 seasons over two years.
An interstellar cast
To carry his project — director of Red Notice and The Millers — counts on renowned actors. Henry Cavill will be the headliner and will be starring alongside singer Rita Ora and Sterling K. Brown. Alba Baptista will also be there, facing John Kim, Laura Gordon and Tom Griffin. We will probably have to wait a little longer to find out what Voltron has in store for its fans on Prime Video. We can also imagine that this will be an opportunity for the platform to address a new audience, to bring together new and old fans around what will undoubtedly be presented as a major event for Prime Video.
