Netflix is expanding its list of devices incompatible with the app. Three will become obsolete as of June 2025. The only solution is to buy a newer one.
Watching Netflix is very simple. Since its launch, the streaming service has been available on just about every device in the world: smartphone, TV, game console, etc. But as time goes by and technologies evolve, some apps end up no longer working on this or that device. Netflix is no exception.
New devices have just been added to the list of those now incompatible with Netflix. It is inexorably growing over the years and pushing reluctant users to upgrade their equipment (or cancel their subscription). Here, the end of support will take effect on June 3, 2025.
Netflix will no longer work on these devices as of June 2025
The affected devices are 3 in number and all come from Amazon. This is the first generation of Fire TV products, which includes the Fire TV Stick, Fire TV, and Fire TV Stick with Alexa, each launched in 2014. The web giant has been discontinuing these devices for years. They haven't received any feature or security updates since then. While this doesn't prevent them from working properly, Netflix believes they're now obsolete, particularly due to their performance. Note that this is just speculation. The streaming platform isn't exactly explicit about the reasons for the discontinuation in the email it's sending to affected subscribers. However, it is very likely that this is due to new Netflix standards, for example the AV1 video codec used since 2020 for better image quality.
If you are affected and want to continue watching Netflix on something other than a smart TV, the only solution is to buy another, more recent accessory to connect your TV, and install the service's application on it.
