Prime Video brought together advertisers and the press to present the projects that will soon be added to its catalog. For the platform, like its competitors, this month of May is a golden opportunity to showcase its schedule and secure attractive advertising campaigns to finance its low-cost offering. This is the company's second appearance at this event, and it didn't do things by halves. In addition to the rapid renewal of Fallout and the first image of Spider-Noir, the company took the opportunity to announce a project based on the Creed saga. No fourth installment of the boxer's adventures for the moment, Prime Video hopes to create a surprise with a spin-off series.
Named Delphi, this spin-off series is part of the franchise universe, itself derived from the Rocky saga. While the plot details remain confidential, Prime Video has specified that it will follow young boxers training in the gym of the same name. We do know, however, who will be behind the scenes: Marco Ramirez is acting as showrunner. This isn't the first time he's had to bring a series to life; he's the one behind The Defenders on Netflix. Michael B. Jordan won't be far behind, as he's producing the series.
The Delphi Boxing Academy in Detail
While Prime Video is keeping the project's content a secret, information shared in the Rocky saga and the Creed films allows us to formulate some theories regarding the characters involved in this project. The Delphi Boxing Academy is a training gym located in Los Angeles. It was founded by Tony “Duke” Evers (Tony Burton) after his retirement in 1968. The series isn't expected to illustrate the creation of this establishment, but rather to tell the story of a new generation of athletes hoping to make a career out of it. The connection to Creed is obvious, as “Duke” was Apollo Creed’s trainer.
For several years, his son Tony “Little Duke” Evers (Wood Harris) has controlled the establishment. The character first appeared in Creed in 2015. He then trained Danny Wheeler, Adonis Creed’s opponent. The latter had actually asked Evers for help, which he refused. After his victory against the so-called “Stuntman”, he finally became “Little Duke’s” student. We can therefore hope to see Adonis briefly, probably to pass the baton to the new characters.
For now, it is unknown when this new series will air. Its official announcement during the Prime Video Upfront proves that it is a priority for the company. It remains to be seen whether it will find a place of choice within the platform's catalog. As a reminder, the Creed trilogy is worth more than $660 million at the global box office, a community of fans who will undoubtedly not hesitate to discover this new chapter of the extended Rocky universe on the small screen.
