Android 16 will bring battery health tracking features. But not all Pixels will benefit from them, far from it.

Why your Google Pixel won't get this long-awaited Android 16 update

The Android 16 update will integrate the ability to integrate a battery health menu natively into the system. This feature will be particularly useful for Google's Pixel phones, as other manufacturers already offer such an option on their overlays. But while the new Pixel smartphones will benefit from it, this will not be the case for older models, even if they are relatively recent.

“The battery health indicator is currently available in beta 3 (of Android 16, editor's note) on the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Due to limitations, this feature will not be available on older Pixel devices on the market,” Google explains on IssueTracker, its bug and issue reporting tool. The status of this issue has even officially changed to “Unresolveable”, leaving little hope for compatibility with older Pixels in the future.

No Battery Health Monitoring on Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and Earlier Models

All Pixel phones released before the Pixel 8a will therefore not be entitled to this menu describing the battery health, which includes the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which are still relatively new. The excuse of “limitations” may seem strange. On the face of it, these are not hardware limitations, since the Pixel 8a is eligible while the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are not. We would have liked Google to be more forthcoming about this so that we could understand the real reason for this very limited support.

With the new battery health monitoring menu, users will be able to check the number of full charge cycles performed with the mobile and what percentage of the maximum battery capacity remains compared to the original capacity (in other words, the degree of battery degradation). It will also be possible to set a charge limit and adjust smart charging to preserve battery health.
