French users have never had access to YouTube's Premium Lite subscription. This simple and attractive plan allows you to watch videos (excluding music videos) without ads—and that's about it. No offline downloads, no background listening: these features remain reserved for the classic Premium subscription. However, faced with the platform's advertising invasion, many would undoubtedly be willing to pay the equivalent of the $8 monthly fee charged in the United States.
Two is better
Unfortunately, this plan is not available in France. We can console ourselves with the test currently being conducted by YouTube: a "duo" offer in which two people can watch the platform's videos, including music videos, download them, and listen to them in the background for €19.99 per month. France is indeed part of the panel of countries where the experiment is being conducted, along with India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Please note that this subscription is only offered to certain users (the criteria are unclear).
"We're testing new plans to offer more flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including a Premium subscription option for two people, which allows two users to share a subscription at a reduced rate," YouTube confirmed to the website MoneyControl.
Reduced rate? Yes, compared to two "solo" subscriptions at €12.99, and also compared to the Family offer at €23.99 per month. This allows you to add up to 5 family members to your own YouTube subscription. This is reminiscent of Spotify Premium's Duo plan, which lets you enjoy the streaming service as a couple, saving money as a result.
