To regain audience confidence, Disney Studios is implementing a new strategy that's as simple as it is effective: bombarding the release calendar with a host of cult franchises. Last year, the end-of-year blockbuster marked the return of Moana in a second feature film that, while disappointing, was still a hit in theaters. Over a million dollars in revenue later, the success of this approach is no longer in doubt, and the entertainment giant is preparing to do it again. This year, the “Disney Christmas” will be none other than Zootopia 2, the long-awaited sequel to Nick and Judy’s first adventures, released in 2016.
This new date is set for November 26th. And since there are only six months left before this deadline, the Mickey Mouse studio has finally decided to offer us a first glimpse of the upcoming film. And even then, “glimpse” is a strong word to describe the trailer released this late afternoon. Rather than showing excerpts directly from the feature film, Disney preferred to animate what appear to be mismatched story elements, as if to confuse the issue. At least the studio avoids spoiling the best scenes: a mystery maintained certainly, but which costs us the understanding of the images broadcast.
Zootopia 2, what's it about?
Well for now, we don't really know. But one thing is certain: Nick, Judy and their new sidekick Gary De'Snake are about to experience some serious adventures. The strange chase against the police suggests that the protagonists will once again find themselves on the wrong side of the law, and that they will have to go through new areas of Zootopia to get out of it. This is also what the synopsis promises, which reveals that Nick and Judy suddenly find themselves fully undercover (despite their rookie roles within the police) in order to solve a mystery surrounding the infamous snake Gary. We will also note the presence of a hooded figure, to say the least menacing, who will surely establish himself as the main antagonist of this new adventure.
Disney Animation creative director Jared Bush also made his own statement to try to clarify the enigmatic teaser: “We are thrilled to welcome you once again to the extraordinary and vast animal metropolis of Zootopia, and to take the audience on a fun and wild journey to parts of the city we have never visited before. From the swamps of the semi-aquatic mammals to the vast desert dunes and even greater mysteries, our heroes, Judy and Nick, will meet many new friends and discover even more about the world, themselves, and a brand new snake in town.”
The final moments of the teaser do indeed introduce us to new faces at high speed. No names, no dialogue, and no voices for these new characters, who are revealed in this way to pique our curiosity. While waiting for the feature film to arrive in theaters, remember that an animated miniseries Zootopia+ (released in 2022) can be discovered on Disney+.
