Rare are the games that bring about a turning point in the way an entire genre is conceived. The RPG, particularly in open world, has nevertheless undergone some wonderful revivals over the past twenty years. From the first Assassin's Creed to Zelda Breath of the Wild, including The Witcher 3, it has constantly rethought its model. The latest representative to have been able to set a precedent in this area is none other than Baldur's Gate 3, the game of the year 2023. A priori, it will really be emulated for years to come and at the same time, there is no question of making a copy.
Baldur's Gate 3 shows the way
The depth of Baldur's Gate 3, both in its story and its gameplay mechanics, completely seduced the world of players in 2023. After four years of early access to refine its copy, it was able to provide a memorable version that was further enriched with several updates until this year 2025. Now, the Larian studio is turning the page. But the shadow of this third installment still hangs over the CRPG market.
The Dungeons & Dragons universe, in which Baldur's Gate 3 is set, is preparing numerous projects after celebrating its 50th anniversary last year. Among them, a new game has just been announced by Giant Skull. It is the former director of God of War 3 and the two Star Wars Jedi, Stig Asmussen, who is at the helm. However, he has in mind something that should join the production of Larian Studios while knowing how to distance himself from it.
On the occasion of the Summer Game Fest, Stig Asmussen spoke with our colleagues at Polygon. He gave some details about this new AAA game in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. He had felt the weight of lore constraints while working on Star Wars. This time, it's a relief for him to touch this more permissive franchise.
However, we feel that a certain Baldur's Gate 3 has been there, which is not without pressure. The man wants to create his own game, far from comparison with the latter. However, he acknowledges a desire to get closer to it in terms of quality:
Don't get me wrong, we intend to make CRPGs that will be as serious as BG3.
Stig Asmussen, for Polygon.
Therefore, Giant Skull's game should move away from Baldur's Gate 3 in form. It will be presented as a heroic fantasy solo adventure. Expect melee combat and immersive storytelling. In fact, this is probably where it could be closer to Larian's title. Asmussen says that "50 DMs [Dungeon Masters, editor's note]" are working on the game's story. "Hundreds and hundreds of monsters" are also in development. The ambition is there to make an impression!
