We've all experienced it before. You're sitting there, scrolling through your favorite vertical video platform, and then suddenly, your screen starts bombarding you with a very bright brightness. After a little research, you may have realized that this is coming from HDR (High Dynamic Range) content.
Indeed, for the moment, the distribution of HDR content on Android (and on mobile more broadly) is somewhat random. So much so that we've even seen users around us disable HDR content on Instagram or TikTok to be at peace.
It's a shame. HDR content benefits not only from higher brightness, but also from a greater dynamic range, hence the name. This means that you'll have more color nuances in the darkest or brightest areas, but also more contrast. In short, much better image quality.
Android 16 should change everything about HDR
The Telegram channel Mystic Leaks has unearthed a new page dedicated to HDR on Android 16. This is not yet available to the public, but it could arrive as early as the next beta of Android16QPR1.
This page, integrated into the screen menu, would not only allow you to disable the additional brightness on HDR content, but also to vary its intensity. Enough to fine-tune your smartphone to reach the right level.
For once, Android 16 would follow in the footsteps of Samsung, which already introduced such a setting in One UI7, although under Android 15. The latest version of the Korean interface, however, currently only offers the ability to activate or deactivate additional brightness on HDR content, and not to vary its intensity.
