No Intel Mac will be compatible with macOS 27. The future version of the operating system, which will be released in the fall of 2026, will only work on Macs equipped with an Apple chip (M1, M2, etc.). Already, macOS Tahoe 26, presented during the WWDC keynote, has eliminated several Intel chip models from its compatibility list: iMac 2019, iMac Pro, Mac mini 2018, MacBook Air 2020 and the MacBook Pros from 2018 and 2019.
Apple will continue to offer security updates for Intel Macs
It was during the Platforms State of the Union conference, which immediately followed the inaugural keynote, that Apple announced the bad news. macOS Tahoe 26 is therefore officially the last version of the system compatible with Intel Macs. This is the epilogue of a long history between Apple and Intel, which began in 2005, during WWDC. It was about replacing IBM's PowerPC platform, which could no longer meet the needs of the Apple company.
After 15 years of (more or less) good and loyal service, Intel processors have given way to Apple chips: it was in 2020 that the first M1 Macs were launched, with the success we know. The manufacturer has never looked back, and why should it? Its chips are perfectly calibrated and optimized for its machines, whether it's the Mac, but also the iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch...
While macOS Tahoe and its predecessors support Intel Macs, the truth is that these computers were only entitled to a small portion of new features. They had to make do with very little... Starting next year, they will therefore no longer be entitled to anything, or almost nothing: Apple will continue to support these Macs for many years to come with security updates.
