Apple's new smart home OS, homeOS, is expected to arrive alongside Siri 2.0

Apple's new smart home OS, homeOS, is expected to arrive alongside Siri 2.0

WWDC 2025 has just concluded. Apple's developer conference left many of Apple's fans wanting more. The Cupertino giant didn't have a lot of new features in store to sell us on the dream. In fact, Apple spent a lot of time talking about the new design of its operating systems, Liquid Glass, to the detriment of more concrete new features, particularly in terms of artificial intelligence.

We particularly regret the absence of homeOS, the operating system for the connected home, which has been the talk of the town for several years. Built on the foundations of tvOS, the operating system for televisions, the OS would power all of Apple's future home automation products, including the connected display, halfway between the iPad and the HomePod. Initially expected last March, the smart display was postponed following the debacle of the new Siri. The "HomePad," which would be one of the cornerstones of Apple's strategy to carve out a niche in the home automation market, would ultimately not be released until spring 2026.

homeOS patiently awaits the new Siri

According to information from Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg, "Apple never intended to unveil homeOS at WWDC." In fact, the Californian giant does not intend to take advantage of a keynote for developers to unveil homeOS. Apple would simply announce the operating system at the same time as its first connected display.

As the informant indicates, Apple's "initial plan" was to present homeOS "in March alongside" a new product, likely the hybrid HomePod. The delays accumulated by Siri forced Apple to reschedule, which mechanically pushed back the announcement of homeOS. If Mark Gurman's information is confirmed, it seems that homeOS is indeed in the starting blocks for a release next spring, several months before WWDC 2026.

Many of Apple's projects therefore depend on the new Siri mixed with generative AI. Announced at WWDC 2024, the next-generation voice assistant has been postponed several times. It would finally be deployed in spring 2026, which would unlock the release of the hybrid HomePod, and the presentation of homeOS. Mark Gurman explains that Apple could still present "the device and the operating system without the new Siri features, to add them later", but this approach "would harm the user experience".

As a reminder, the new Siri boosted by generative AI will have to be able to use user data and applications installed on the iPhone to respond to requests. Integrated with the smart display and homeOS, it will serve as both an enhanced assistant and a smart conversation partner with a real personality.
