Are the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max really more powerful than their predecessors? We have the beginnings of an answer.

Are the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max really more powerful than their predecessors? We have the beginnings of an answer.

Several months before their official presentation, the performance of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max is revealed. It's an opportunity to see if they do better than last year's iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

Are the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max really more powerful than their predecessors? We have the beginnings of an answer.

The time is approaching. In September, Apple will unveil the new iPhone 17 and its variants. The smartphones will have to take over from the 2024 iPhone 16 by displaying enough interesting aspects to justify the upgrade, or the first purchase. The internet being what it is, there's no need to wait months to learn more about future models. For example, Apple is expected to improve the battery of the iPhone 17, but not by increasing its capacity compared to the previous ones.

On the screen side, the latest rumors speak of a high refresh rate for the four upcoming models: iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and 17 Air. The base model, however, is not expected to have an adaptive refresh rate, nor the LTPO OLED panel that would equip its bigger siblings. As for the processor, it will unsurprisingly be an A19 or A19 Pro chip depending on the version. And if you're wondering how much more powerful it will be than the A18s, you can find out right now.

Here are the supposed performance figures for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max

On the Chinese social network Weibo, leaker Digital Chat Station gives us the supposed scores of the A19 Pro processor on the Geekbench 6 benchmark. This is the chip that will power the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. In single-core mode, it reaches more than 4,000 points. In multi-core, it's just over 10,000. For comparison, the A18 Pro clocked around 3,500 and 9,000, respectively.

Based on these averages, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max should be around 10 to 12 percent more powerful than their predecessors. So, in normal smartphone usage, you're unlikely to notice much of a difference. Remember that the A19 Pro processor will be released the same month as Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9500, two high-end chips. The power race is going to be fierce.
