Until recently, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sat atop the list of the highest-rated games of 2025 on Metacritic, the video game equivalent of Rotten Tomatoes. But the game already touted as the GOTY has just lost its crown to a simple update. As spotted by our colleagues at GamesRadar, the top of the podium is now reserved for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The reworked version of the cult title boasts a score of 95, closely followed by the update of Breath of the Wild, while Clair Obscur is in third place with a score of 93.
So yes, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are real gems for the Switch, which have become even more enjoyable to play on Switch 2, thanks in particular to increased fluidity and the inclusion of additional features via the Zelda Notes app. But just as the presence of the Elden Ring DLC in the race for game of the year disturbed players, is it fair to pit improved editions against a new release from 2025?
A ranking to put into perspective
If Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 loses its leading position, this result should be qualified. With more than 80 reviews, its score is based on a much wider selection of evaluations than the two Zelda games, whose scores are based on a very limited panel of critics. This difference in volume plays a role in the credibility of the scores, even if, on paper, Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are now at the top of the ranking. Also, we could quibble by adding that, even if these reworks were released this year, they are still titles belonging to the years 2017 and 2023 respectively.
Clair Obscur on Switch 2, when?
For now, the port of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to Nintendo Switch 2 is still far from being a done deal. Following the global success of the French RPG, Sandfall Interactive CEO Guillaume Broche had declared that it was “still too early” to decide to release the game on this platform. Faced with its new reputation, the studio will have to sort through project proposals and this port may not be at the forefront, even if the CEO found the idea “interesting”. But now that Nintendo’s console has experienced a record launch, perhaps the teams will rework their priorities. To be continued.
