Dacia is preparing an inexpensive Renault 5 called "Evader"

Dacia is preparing an inexpensive Renault 5 called "Evader"

There's going to be change at Dacia. By the end of 2026, a new Sandero could be released, with a fully electric version replacing the Spring. The project, known as "Evader," would address a new problem for the low-cost brand, which is no longer able to successfully sell its small electric car. Produced in China, the Spring no longer benefits from the ecological bonus, and its proposition no longer holds up against Chinese competitors, but also European ones (Citroën ë-C3, Fiat Grande Panda).

According to Le Parisien, the car in question would have opted for the technical platform of the Renault 5, in other words the AmpR Small platform, which is already due to arrive on the next Nissan Micra and on a potential Mitsubishi Colt, in addition to the current Alpine A290. Dacia is reportedly aiming for a price of 15,000 euros, to clearly distance itself from its competitors, who are looking to offer electric cars at 20,000 or 25,000 euros. It should take the Sandero name, be manufactured in Europe and come with hybrid versions.

An electric Sandero to replace the Spring

Dacia's future inexpensive electric city car will not offer the same features technical than the Renault 5, even if the latter offers a 20,000 euro version. In a previous interview with Caradisiac, Dacia boss Denis Le Vot had already stated that we should not expect an electric car with "700 km of autonomy", nor "a recharge in 17 minutes, but we will make the right technological choices at the right time".

There remains a window of opportunity for Dacia because BYD does not yet offer an ultra-competitive model, whether in terms of price or autonomy. The Dolphin Surf (also known internationally as the Seagull) starts at €19,990 with just 220 km on the WLTP cycle.

Remember that the current Spring is priced at €16,000, which is €3,000 more than a Sandero. Its technical offering is getting older, since at this price, it's a 45 hp engine with a range of 200 km. In January, in an interview with Automotive News, Denis Le Vot discussed the brand's electric future, and what's next for the Spring. He announced that after 2030, "there will be more than two [electric] models that will be launched year after year." These should be the electrification of the Jogger, the Duster, and the Bigster.
