While a researcher had already revealed that several hacks had left 184 million passwords in the wild last May, a new impressive data leak could leave many Internet users vulnerable.
And while software is increasingly secure, including a new feature in Google Chrome that promises to automatically change your hacked passwords, this may not be enough...
30 hacked data sources exposed
In a recent analysis by Cybernews, we learned that researchers from the newspaper have been conducting an investigation since the beginning of the year concerning massive data leaks.
According to the article published This Wednesday, June 18th, the team of researchers has already gotten their hands on 30 compromised data sources, with several tens of millions of identifiers and passwords for some of them, for a total of 16 billion identifiers in total.
If the discovery of Jérémie Fowler last month, which revealed that he had discovered exactly 184,162,718 identifiers and passwords, this ultimately represents only a drop in the ocean compared to this new revelation.
Malware at the origin of these data leaks?
While the Cybernews researchers did not reveal their sources so as not to compromise users' passwords, they claim that these discoveries are the sign of a real organization on the part of cybercriminals.
These leaks are said to come from several malware that finely analyze the websites visited by users, and meticulously record websites, logins, passwords, and all other information that may be used subsequently.

However, GAFAM were not spared, as Cybernews researchers revealed that a large number of user accounts from Google, Apple, and Facebook were also targeted. Since these services are popular all over the world and used by the majority of Internet users, the impact could be considerable...
And while this is already cause for concern, the investigation also revealed that government sites are also affected, including Russian platforms according to the researchers, but possibly other governments as well.
