Dawnwalker, The Witcher's competitor, 4 shows off gameplay, it makes you very hungry

While The Witcher 4 isn't due out until 2027/2028, the Rebel Wolves studio, made up of CD Projekt RED veterans, is due to release Blood of Dawnwalker in 2026, an open-world RPG emphasizing freedom and difficult choices where we play as a human/vampire hybrid. A synopsis that's clearly mouthwatering, but we still have to see what the gameplay will be like. After an appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase during Summer Game Fest 2025, the title has just presented the thing in a generous video of more than 20 minutes.

Blood of Dawnwalker by The Witcher 3 veterans bares its fangs and gameplay

Even if we don't play as a white-haired witcher but a young man named Coen, Blood of Dawnwalker clearly bears the mark of its veteran developers of The Witcher 3. From the first minutes of the gameplay presentation available below, we feel this influence. The video begins with the presentation of a relatively technical combat system, which also takes some inspiration from Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 where you will have to orient your blows in relation to your opponent's actions. We also get a glimpse of the use of magic in Blood of Dawnwalker, based on blood, air and heat, but at the cost of our character's life.

The interface also bears the influence of The Witcher 3, with different sections for pieces of equipment of various rarities to equip our character, and the need to heal ourselves to recover strength, via loot or preparations of our own. The gameplay video then continues by taking us on a tour of a city, which seems to have a certain life independent of our protagonist. Rebel Wolves tells us that, depending on our choices when it comes to the vampires we hunt down to save our family, the guards under their influence can ultimately make life difficult for us in the territories they occupy. As a reminder, we have 30 days to save our family, and time will only advance by completing important quests with their share of choices having a major impact on the rest of our journey, like in The Witcher. It will therefore be a resource to be spent carefully.

The Blood of Dawnwalker gameplay clip concludes at night, where we can finally see Coen's vampiric powers in action. He can move from rooftop to rooftop, notably to find an innocent victim in order to gorge himself, lethally or not, on their blood. The video concludes with a boss fight that couldn't be more bloody. In any case, these are very promising beginnings while we wait for The Witcher 4. Remember that this is an excerpt from a pre-beta version of the game, which may therefore change between now and its release in 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
