Disney+ abandons one of its cult series

In 2023, the announcement of the arrival of Doctor Who on Disney+ had the effect of a television earthquake, especially in France where the series suffered from erratic broadcasting. For the first time, the BBC partnered with a streaming giant to give a new global dimension to its flagship franchise. The objective was to relaunch Doctor Who with a revised budget, modernized special effects, and a revamped cast, starting with Ncuti Gatwa, who played the first Doctor of this new generation, under the direction of showrunner Russell T Davies, who had returned to the helm.

The strategy seemed to be a winning one. The American platform promised almost simultaneous broadcasting around the world, access to a young and international audience, and unprecedented visibility for an already cult series. The first episodes showed a new lease of life and a desire for openness, both in content and form.

A mixed review

Despite a generally positive critical reception and a production praised for its ambition, the bet was not entirely won. While the BBC was able to benefit from a significantly increased budget thanks to Disney, international audiences did not meet the streaming giant's expectations. Outside of the United Kingdom, where loyalty to the BBC remains unwavering, Doctor Who has failed to sufficiently unite viewers.

Season 2 ended with an unexpected twist: the regeneration of the Doctor, leaving the face of Ncuti Gatwa for that of Billie Piper, the iconic actress of the series in the 2000s. Many saw it as a nostalgic nod, modeled on the return of David Tennant, while others denounced a recycling of ideas, symptomatic of a lack of boldness. In this tense context, Disney+ has decided not to renew the adventure. The platform will not broadcast the next season of Doctor Who.

The BBC is already preparing the sequel

The BBC, the historical owner of the series, does not intend to abandon its flagship. Discussions remain ongoing to find a new international broadcaster. Scripts for two more seasons are already in preparation, and a spin-off titled The War Between the Land and the Sea is expected to satisfy fans' anticipation. The rumor of a special episode reuniting David Tennant and Billie Piper to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2005 reboot fuels hopes of a return to basics.

The future of Doctor Who will therefore be written without Disney+, but not without ambition. The BBC is already exploring new partnerships, notably with other major platforms like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, which could ensure the international broadcast of future seasons.
