Disney+ has launched a rewards program for its subscribers. Available initially in the United States, Disney+ Perks will expand internationally by the end of the year (although it's unclear which countries will be eligible). The platform had already experimented with such an offer a year ago, but for a limited time. This time, the program is here to stay.
First in the United States, then elsewhere in the world
The rewards read like a Prévert-style list, there's a bit of everything: special promotions at the group's hotels, 20% discounts at Adidas and 15% off Funko figurines, free trial months at DashPass and Super Duolingo, virtual items in mobile games, free emojis (certainly the most essential gift of the lot)... There are also contests to attend previews and win cruises.
"This is just the beginning," says Disney+. "New bonuses will be offered regularly, giving fans even more reasons to come back, discover new content, and immerse themselves in the stories they love." A similar program has been implemented for the Disney-owned streaming service Hulu.
Disney isn't saying anything about it, but it's obviously intended to encourage subscribers to stay (and pay their dues each month) instead of yo-yoing with their subscription. This has become a common phenomenon in the streaming industry, given the increasingly difficult monthly prices.
Disney+ isn't the worst off. In the first quarter, the service gained 1.4 million subscribers, bringing its total to 126 million worldwide. An unexpected increase that can be explained, according to the company, by a solid catalog: two programs have been very successful in recent weeks, Moana 2 and Daredevil: Born Again.
