Google is preparing new features for its interface dedicated to connected TVs. They will be very useful for those who tend to fall asleep in front of the screen.

Do you often fall asleep in front of the TV? Google TV is finally thinking of you

It's been a long day and you decide to spend the evening watching a few episodes of your current series. You settle in comfortably and launch the appropriate streaming platform on your connected TV. By the end of the first 45 minutes, you can feel your eyelids getting heavy. But you want to see what happens next, so you rub your eyes and continue. It's a waste of time: you're not even halfway through the second episode when you fall asleep on the couch.

If you're lucky, you wake up after a full night's sleep. Otherwise, you're abruptly jolted out of Morpheus's arms before sunrise by a noisy scene. In both cases, your TV was left on for nothing, and it'll show up on your electricity bill. If this happens to you often, it can end up hurting your wallet. The solution? Set a timer so the TV turns off automatically. But if you have a device running Google TV, it's a real pain to get there. The company wants to change that.

Google TV will add new features for those who fall asleep in front of the screen

Currently, Google TV's built-in timer is hidden deep in the settings, so much so that many are unaware of its existence. Even when it is, it's disappointingly simple: set a timer, see the current one's status, and... that's it. Lines of code spotted by Android Authority, however, show that Google wants to beef up this feature.

They indicate that we should be entitled to options to cancel, pause, and restart the timer. Additionally, messages could appear on the TV screen when there are X minutes or seconds left before the TV turns off. It's likely that we could then add time to delay it.

From what we see, the notifications would arrive at 5 minutes and 45 seconds before the deadline. This last choice is quite strange, 1 minute seems more logical, so it's possible that the code refers to something else. Answer in a few weeks, or even months. Perhaps at the same time as the future Google TV updates expected with Android 16?
