Among the many problems of Dragon Ball Super, one seems to have been overlooked: that of Goten and Trunks. Sidelined, they very rarely participate in the major events of the series. However, there is a way to put them back in the spotlight.
The Wasted Potential of Goten and Trunks
During the Buu arc, Goten and Trunks embodied the future. Before returning to the afterlife, Goku passed the torch to them to defeat the antagonist. By fusing, they achieved phenomenal strength, but it was not enough to defeat Buu. After this failure, they unfortunately remained inactive, and only reappear in End of Z in a pitiful state.
DBS could have taken advantage of the opportunity to highlight them, but they were constantly pushed aside. The most glaring case was during the Tournament of Power where they only dealt with C-17's island. However, they were given a spotlight in the Super Hero arc, where Toyotaro directed several chapters where they were at the center of the plot. However, in the end, they were not the heroes of the arc. However, there is hope, as their future could be bright.
Goten and Trunks can become powerful allies
Goten and Trunks are precocious and possess enormous potential. It has been proven that mixed-race Saiyans are far more powerful than pure Saiyans. What's stopping them from reaching the same strength as Gohan? Absolutely nothing. Goku's first son has shown that he can reach his father's level without going through the Super Saiyan God stage. Goten and Trunks can therefore do the same, or even better.
With the right will, the two teenagers can catch up and become very powerful. Their fusion would allow them to reach an exceptional level, an asset that could prove crucial in the future. Indeed, with a confrontation against Black Frieza looming, it is essential that our heroes can count on strong allies. Goten and Trunks could thus make an explosive return by occupying a central place in the manga's biggest arc.
The problem with Goten and Trunks' return
Seeing these characters shine again may be a bit of a laugh, but is it really necessary? DBS has only just put Gohan and Piccolo back in the spotlight: wouldn't adding Goten and Trunks be excessive? The series has done well without the duo for all this time, so their return to the action might seem like a stretch.
The real problem is that they've already had an arc centered around them. A large part of the Super Hero manga arc is devoted to them, to a fairly mediocre result. Their daily lives didn't really captivate readers: it was ultimately just a rehash of the Great Saiyaman story. Goten and Trunks don't make the crowds move, which explains why they stay in the shadows, and why they probably will stay there again.
