Last week, Square Enix enhanced the official website for the original game's 25th anniversary with character sheets for popular characters like Zidane and Bibi. These sheets also included brand new, never-before-seen artwork, suggesting that the Japanese giant is preparing the ground for the upcoming announcement of the famous FF9 Remake. This week, it's the same story with even more unseen official images, further fueling fans' excitement about a potential imminent announcement.
New visual clues of an imminent announcement for FF9 Remake?
On July 7, Final Fantasy 9 will officially celebrate its 25th anniversary. Given the enormous popularity of its flagship franchise, the Japanese giant has, however, set up an official website for the occasion. Over time, it has been enhanced with announcements and images, in preparation for a worthy celebration for the big day. At the same time, there are numerous reports and rumors that a FF9 Remake is indeed in the works. In recent weeks, Square Enix has been increasing its operations, suggesting that the announcement of this long-awaited Remake could arrive very soon.
A few hours ago, new, unpublished official images graced the official website. We can now see brand new artwork for new characters that could be added to our party in the original game, such as Freya, Eiko, and Quina. As many fans have pointed out, these look very similar to the artwork you might find on a character select screen. Does this mean we're getting our first glimpse of such a screen for FF9 Remake? We'd think so.
As a bonus, these new drawings were done by the original game's character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana, 25 years earlier. With Summer Game Fest 2025 just around the corner, the stars seem to be aligning for FF9 Remake to finally make a highly anticipated appearance there. Check back in exactly one week for the opening ceremony to find out for sure.
