While the creator of Game of Thrones is still struggling to finish his books, the franchise is making its way onto the video game scene. In May, Netmarble studio tried its hand at the exercise with the action-adventure RPG Kingsroad, which wasn't a great success. It was in a rather unusual context that a new game was announced at Summer Game Fest 2025. We still know little about it, but it looks (very) appealing on paper and will drive some people crazy.
Game of Thrones War for Westeros is revealed
According to information from Jason Schreier, Warner Bros Montreal (Gotham Knights) is currently working on a major Game of Thrones game, but nothing is certain yet, as the group would first have to accept the project. Pending confirmation, PlaySide (Kill Knight) has announced that it is working on Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. A real-time strategy title that will be released on PC in 2026. "Lead the great houses, rally famous heroes, and rewrite the history of the kingdom. Will you have the strength to seize the Iron Throne?" says the Steam description of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
We didn't see any gameplay, but we did get a cutscene where we see the Night King kill Jon Snow with his sword, before the latter transforms into a White Walker and goes to the dark side. In Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the player will be able to manage the armies of Houses Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, or even the Night King's army of the dead directly. The studio promises brutal battles where we can deploy infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons to rewrite history.
Game of Thrones War for Westeros will feature a campaign that will allow players to travel across the Seven Kingdoms and relive the most iconic moments alone or in multiplayer. Of course, as in the original work and the series, politics will have its place, and the power struggle through maneuvers will be an element of gameplay. This new game certainly has the potential to drive some people crazy, including strategy fans, and we've already lost one of our editors following this revelation.
