It's a waste. Six years after the airing of its second season, Mindhunter has yet to decide to return to the forefront. David Fincher's series was, however, one of Netflix's unanimously acclaimed shows, acclaimed by both critics and audiences. Such success should have convinced the Red N of the need to quickly return, to offer a conclusion to the adventures of Holden Ford and Bill Tench. But the audiences were clearly not up to the investment, at least that's what Fincher explained to the Journal du Dimanche in 2023.
“I'm very proud of the first two seasons, but it's a very expensive series. In Netflix's eyes, we didn't attract enough viewers to justify such an investment.” A third season seemed unthinkable. But a glimmer of hope has just appeared, in the form of a statement from Holt McCallany. Interviewed by CBR, the actor who plays Bill Tench explains that several avenues are being considered to offer a finale to the thriller.
Maybe…
He did not specify the progress of the project, preferring to emphasize the hypothetical nature of this return. "I would really like her to come back. David gave me a little hope during our discussion... but it would take a perfect alignment between the sun, the moon, and the stars." Already in terms of planning, Fincher is already quite busy at the red N. Since Mindhunter precisely, he has made Netflix his new home, all his films since having been proposed and financed by Reed Hastings' firm.
He is one of the creatives of the streaming service's showcase, one of those who (Netflix hopes) will allow him to win an Oscar for Best Picture. He also has several projects in the pipeline, he is working on the remake of Strangers on a Train as well as a project evolving in the universe of Squid Game. So many projects that don't really leave the field open for a film, let alone a trilogy. Holt McCallany's statements nevertheless confirm that the director has not abandoned the idea of continuing his exploration of the criminal mind, alongside the two FBI agents.
