Google is preparing to roll out its battery health preservation feature for Pixel 9 series smartphones. This feature should be deactivatable.
With the Pixel 9a, Google has introduced a new feature aimed at improving long-term battery life. This is an assistant that automatically varies the charging power and the battery capacity level to limit cell degradation, and therefore capacity loss with repeated charging cycles. This may result in a slight decrease in charging speed and battery life, but the result is a more durable smartphone whose battery starts to show signs of weakness less quickly.
We know that this feature will be offered on future Pixel models, but some already available phones will also be updated to benefit from it. AssembleDebug explains that Google has already laid the foundations for its integration into the Pixel 9 series. It is not officially deployed, but it has managed to activate it on its Pixel by getting its fingers in the grease. According to him, Google is waiting for the release of Android 16 to offer it to all owners of a Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Google had also announced that this option would be pushed to the Pixel 8a, but not to smartphones released earlier, including the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, which are even more high-end than the Pixel 8a. “Due to limitations, this feature will not be available on older Pixel devices released”, we were told a few weeks ago.
On the Pixel 9a, the feature cannot be disabled, and this will probably be the case on future Pixels. However, it can be on the Pixel 9, so as not to impose a restriction on charging that was not planned at the time of purchase by consumers, who could complain to Google. The option is found in the Battery Health menu of Settings.
