Since its launch on June 5th, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been the talk of the town. The new console has already broken a historic sales record but also has some flaws that bother gamers, starting with battery life. Against all expectations, even the least demanding titles from the Switch 1's game library seem to drain the machine's battery at high speed. In the increasingly competitive market for portable platforms, this issue is enough to worry gamers and put off future buyers. Some are even considering returning their console for this very reason, and if this is the case for you: don't rush.
Perhaps you've noticed that your console drains very quickly, but that it can hold on to the last percentage of battery for over an hour. Nintendo has just officially communicated on this subject and declares that a charge indicator bug affects its next-generation console. So the battery isn't defective or underperforming, but rather a calibration issue. While this kind of problem can be a real pain when you buy a brand-new machine, users will at least be pleased to learn that there's a way to fix the bug. The Kyoto-based company has shared a guide with rather restrictive steps but which promise radical results.
How to fix Switch 2 battery problems?
First, Nintendo asks players to run the latest console update and apply some changes to the system settings. Since the calibration technique involves recharging and discharging the console several times, it is necessary to disable all automatic standby modes of the console (on the menu, connected to the TV and in game). Then, here are the steps to follow as described by the manufacturer:
- Connect the charging cable directly to the console
- Charge the console until it reaches 100%, or let it charge for at least 3 hours
- Leave the console charging for another hour
- After this hour has passed, unplug the console and let it display the HOME menu for three to four hours (the battery must be discharged as much as possible)
- Once the battery is almost discharged, turn off the console and wait 30 minutes
- Repeat these steps several times: the battery indicator will become increasingly reliable
How to make sure the problem is solved?
Under normal conditions, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires approximately 3 hours to reach a full charge (when it is off or in sleep mode). The console's battery life then varies from 2.5 to 6.5 hours depending on its use. If you notice that your console does not meet these standards established by the manufacturer, despite recalibrating the battery, you will need to contact Nintendo after-sales service.
