iOS, macOS, iPadOS, tvOS… whatever the software version integrated into Apple's operating systems this year, they all come in version "26." For the sake of harmonization, the Apple brand has just made official the change in the numbering of its operating systems. So, there's no question of jumping back in time and moving from the 18th generation of iOS to the twenty-sixth, but simply of referring to the year in which the major update will be released.
In the past, number changes only took place when Apple released a new version of its operating systems. But with an increment following the logic of one version after another (1.0 becomes 2.0, for example), the different Apple operating systems encountered a lag, due to the fact that their first version was not released at the same time, as well as a lag compared to the current year. In 2024, at WWDC, Apple presented iOS 18 at the same time as watchOS 11.
For its part, macOS preferred to launch with a new version renamed by a word and not a number. The latest was Sequoia. It will now be called "Tahoe", incremented following the new name macOS 26.
What the new "26" generation of Apple OS has in store
Lack of new features due to its difficulties with Apple Intelligence, the Cupertino company waited for its developer conference, WWDC, to make the change. It comes at the same time as an overhaul of the interface of all its products, this time with work on lighting, transparency, textures and colors (notably with "Liquid Glass" on iOS). The menus are also more in-depth and everything is designed to follow the user experience according to each command or intention.
The consistency of name and interface therefore continues, as do the application icons, dear to the brand and its customers. The last time Apple made such a change was with iOS 16, at WWDC in June 2022. At that time, it was notably about offering for the first time advanced customization of the lock screen, with options to change colors, typography styles and widgets. In 2020, with iOS 14, the first changes arrived on the side of widgets, placed right in the middle of the application icons.
