Instagram finally adopts a photo ratio that is very common on smartphones

Long gone are the days when Instagram users shared photos in a square format. At the time (early 2010s, prehistory in other words) it was both an aesthetic and practical choice: the 1:1 ratio adapted well to smartphone screens while simplifying the presentation of photos in a grid.

Instagram no longer crops photos at the top and bottom

The square format hasn't disappeared, but the app—acquired by Meta, as everyone knows—has opened up to new formats. Video, of course, has become predominant and makes Instagram look like a TikTok clone! But also landscape and portrait formats, with a maximum ratio of 4:5 for vertical images and 1.91:1 for horizontal ones.

In addition to 4:5, it is now possible to upload photos in 3:4 format. As points out, this is the most common default format for smartphone cameras. Until now, 3:4 images uploaded to the app were cropped at the top and bottom. This is no longer the case.

3:4 photos can be included in their original format not only in posts, but also in carousels. And the 1:1 and 4:5 formats are still available, of course.
