iOS 18 and its iPad equivalent have not been lacking in merit. The operating system, released on September 16, was packed with new features... including the first steps of Apple Intelligence, which Europeans have been able to use since April. The adoption figures revealed by Apple three days before the launch of WWDC show that, unlike Android 15, iOS 18 has attracted a large number of users.
iOS 18 will soon be retiring
88% of iPhones run iOS 18, according to the manufacturer. The criterion is simple: these are smartphones released in the last four years that have made transactions on the App Store as of June 4. For all iPhones, that is, all those in circulation worldwide, the percentage is 82%.
Last year at this time, iOS 17 was the preferred version for 86% of iPhones less than four years old (77% for all models). iOS 18 is therefore doing better than iOS 17, but a little less well than iOS 16, which had 90% adoption on smartphones less than four years old (but "only" 81% of all iPhones).
As for the iPad, 81% of tablets released in the last four years were equipped with iPadOS 18; 71% of all iPads. iPadOS 17 was more popular last year at the same time with an adoption rate of 86%, while iPadOS 16 was at 76%.
This Monday, June 9, Apple will unveil to the world the new versions of its operating systems which should be named after next year, in other words: iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, with the first betas to follow. This will be the beginning of the end for iOS 18 and the beginning of a new cycle...
