If reading the title of this article made you think we must have run out of coffee this morning, that's understandable. Indeed, for the time being, when Apple uses the term ProMotion, we tend to think of it as a synonym for 120Hz. But with the likely arrival of 120Hz displays on the non-Pro models of the iPhone 17 in the fall, Apple could well continue to create a range effect in favor of its Pro models.
This is what a leak specialist suggests on Weibo. Fixed focus digital, that's his handle, explains that the iPhone 17 and 17Air would have "just a normal 120Hz display, but no ProMotion adaptive refresh rate." In classic tech language, this would mean that Apple would have integrated 120Hz displays, but not equipped with LTPO technology, capable of dynamic adaptive refresh down to 10 or 1Hz at the lowest.
What would be the consequences of a screen deprived of ProMotion?
At this stage, if this were to be confirmed, we see two potential consequences. Already, the screens of the iPhone 17 and 17Air could consume slightly more power than those of their Pro counterparts. The impact on battery life should, however, remain negligible, since the screens should still be able to alternate between 60 and 120Hz to reduce consumption.
Another likely consequence is that the "Standby" mode should not be available on the iPhone 17 and 17Air. Indeed, this mode is currently reserved for iPhone Pro equipped with a ProMotion screen. It activates when the screen is tilted to the side and is more or less an improved standby mode, taking advantage of the very low power consumption of a screen capable of going down to very low Hz. We can also think that the Always on mode could not be part of it for the same reason.
The iPhone 17 is emerging as a minor update
This new element contributes to the picture of a future iPhone 17 that is relatively technologically behind. While it should benefit from a larger screen thanks to the reduction of the borders, it should also keep the A18 chip of the iPhone 16, as well as its 8GB of RAM, while the rest of the range, iPhone 17 Air included, would move to 12GB.
