In a few hours, Marvel will release its new series on Disney+. After the release of Daredevil: Born Again, a critical and commercial success, Ironheart does not seem to be captivating in the same way. While the heroine has already been introduced to viewers with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which she intends to follow in the footsteps of Iron Man, Chinaka Hodge's creation could have difficulty finding its audience. To fully enjoy the series and understand the issues, it will undoubtedly be necessary to (re)watch certain key films and episodes of the MCU.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
This is a must-see before watching Ironheart. In this film by Ryan Coogler, released in 2022, Riri Williams takes her first steps in the live-action MCU. We discover her genius, her character, and the circumstances that lead her to join Wakanda. The plot of the Ironheart series begins just a few days after the events of the film. It will therefore be necessary to have a good understanding of the film's elements before starting the series.
The Iron Man Trilogy
Even though Riri Williams does not appear in the Iron Man films, they are essential for understanding the legacy of Tony Stark, the heroine's guardian figure. The trilogy explores the creation of the armors, Stark's philosophy, and the dangers of technology. Riri is directly inspired by the billionaire engineer, both in her technological choices and her moral dilemmas. A spiritual legacy that may be worth revisiting, and not just because it's one of the MCU's best story arcs.
The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War
The Avengers films (from the first to the last installment) offer an overview of the MCU's global issues, particularly regarding the place of superheroes, the management of advanced technologies, and the consequences of their large-scale actions. Captain America: Civil War, for its part, is particularly important because it addresses the issue of superhero responsibility, a central theme in Riri Williams's journey. While they aren't essential to a good understanding of the series, a refresher never hurts.
What If…?
For the most dedicated viewers, episode 6 of season 3 of What If…? (1872) introduces The Hood, the main antagonist of the Ironheart series. Although this version of the character evolves in an alternate universe, this episode allows us to familiarize ourselves with his powers and personality. It's an opportunity to understand a little better who the character is, and what his motivations are.
In summary
- For those who want to get to the point, just watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ironheart will be a direct continuation of the film.
- To go further, you can also continue with the Iron Man trilogy, the Avengers films and Captain America: Civil War.
- Finally, episode 3 of the sixth season of What If…? is an interesting bonus, but not essential.
See you on Disney+
