Lilo & Stitch: In less than a week, the film has already made more money than the original cartoon

Lilo & Stitch: In less than a week, the film has already made more money than the original cartoon

In 2002, Disney released Lilo & Stitch, its new animated film, which was a nice little success at the global box office. It's been over 20 years since Stitch became a true icon at Disney, becoming one of the most beloved characters. However, the little alien hasn't had a lot of successful projects coming his way. Aside from an animated series and two other animated films that didn't explode the scores (with Stitch, the Movie in 2003 and Lilo & Stitch 2 in 2005), we haven't had much to offer. Stitch has mostly become a mascot over the years.

Not everything was a foregone conclusion for the live-action remake, even if the first trailers, featuring the image of a cute Stitch, already seemed to have won over a lot of people. More than a week after the film's release in theaters, the numbers speak for themselves: the LIVE action film of Lilo & Stitch is an undisputed success, already surpassing the original animated film.

$341 million at the global box office

Lilo & Stitch: In less than a week, the film has already made more money than the original cartoon

The latest figures have just been released regarding the revenue generated by the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. During its first week in theaters, during Memorial Day weekend in the United States, the film brought in $183 million at the American box office. Worldwide, the film managed to total $341 million in revenue. A fairly impressive figure for a first week. For comparison, the original animated film managed to generate $145 million at the American box office in four months of operation. The live-action remake therefore does better in one week.

At the global box office level, the animated film Lilo & Stitch managed to achieve a nice score of $275 million during its period of operation. Here again, the live-action remake manages to do much better, in just one week. This can clearly tell us that the film's success promises to be gargantuan.

And the success doesn't stop there for the little blue plush toy. With this very nice score, Stitch has the luxury of beating the figures of the last Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning which managed to accumulate $191 million in worldwide revenue. Thanks to the two films, as well as the very nice success of the last Final Destination: Bloodlines, the American box office has just achieved its biggest Memorial Day weekend in its history with more than $326 million in revenue. A considerable increase compared to the previous record set during the Memorial Day weekend in 2013 with The Hangover Part 3 and Fast & Furious 3. Furious 6.
