What comes after Secret Wars is a mystery. While Kevin Feige has shared the schedule for the next two years, it's not very busy, and the Marvel Studios boss is careful not to say anything more about what comes after Avengers 6. It must be said that, like Endgame, Secret Wars promises to reshuffle the cards and claim a few victims within the historic team. According to Deadline, however, a group of superheroes is among the entertainment giant's priorities. Audiences have been waiting for their return since Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019.
Deadpool & Wolverine was just the beginning; the X-Men are on their way to the MCU. Some of the heroes have been invited to the cast of Doomsday, with Kelsey Grammer, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Patrick Stewart reprising their roles after several decades of absence. It seemed obvious that the heroes would eventually get their own solo film, although the news was never made official. Deadline provides some rather reassuring information. Marvel has a director in its sights, and discussions have begun.
A New Team
While the film risks being yet another commercial failure for the House of Ideas, Thunderbolts* can at least enjoy an excellent reputation among audiences and the press. The film, dedicated to Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian, and Bob, benefited from Jake Schreier's solid direction to stand out as a return to the roots for the struggling franchise. This critical acclaim has not fallen on deaf ears, as Marvel is reportedly considering entrusting him with directing its X-Men project. According to sources interviewed by Deadline, Schreier is in talks to direct this long-awaited reunion.
While the process has not yet begun, it is said that the director is the "ideal candidate for one of the studio's most anticipated films." His team-up film serves as a demonstration of his talent for choral storytelling, a necessary quality for devoting himself to Professor Xavier's mutants.
The script has reportedly already been written by Michael Lesslie. The British screenwriter would be signing his first collaboration with the House of Ideas. This isn't his first time in Hollywood, however, as he co-wrote the 2023 adaptation of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird.
For now, no actors or actresses have been named for the project. It's unclear whether Marvel intends to bring back the heroes developed at Fox in the early 2000s or whether the company will rely on new actors for a fresh start. This was already Feige's strategy with the Fantastic Four. After two films under the aegis of Tim Story, and a reboot directed by Josh Trank, the superhero family is in the hands of Matt Shakman. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are the new Reed Richard, Susan and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.
