For several weeks now, rumors have been growing about a famous portable Xbox from Microsoft. It was at the end of 2024 that the first rumors began to become credible. Since the beginning of 2025, information has multiplied, leaving little room for doubt. According to the latest updates, Microsoft is currently working on two portable consoles, with an "unofficial" machine in development with Asus that could arrive as early as the end of the year.
As well as an official console, entirely developed by Microsoft which is planned for 2027. At least, that was planned. Since yes, according to the latest exclusive information from Jez Corden and Windows Central, the second portable console project is currently on hold.
Xbox: Too many projects at once?
Jez Corden and Windows Central are journalists and media outlets who are generally very well informed about Microsoft's projects. They were the ones who first announced the existence of the Xbox Series S, just hours before its official announcement. For several months, Jez Corden has been revealing numerous updates and information about this famous portable console.
Today, the journalist confirms the existence of two projects, but exclusively announces that the second portable machine, the one that should be entirely produced by Microsoft, is currently on standby. Apparently, according to Windows Central, Microsoft has decided to put the second project on hold to focus on "improving gaming performance under Windows 11," particularly with "Project Kennan," which is the first console in partnership with Asus. The project would not be abandoned, however, and Microsoft would continue development and research to improve its technologies for Xbox portable consoles. The Redmond company would still have great ambitions for this machine, but not right away. Between preparing for Summer Game Fest, developing the first portable console, and advancing Xbox Prime, it might be wiser to lower its goals to avoid going off in all directions. On the competitive side, Nintendo is about to release the Switch 2 next week. As for Sony, the manufacturer does not seem to be any further ahead since the latest rumors seem to confirm that a PlayStation Portable is indeed planned for 2028, but to date, Sony is still in the negotiation phase with AMD and Samsung.
