Man of Steel 2 never made it past the planning stage, much to the dismay of fans of Henry Cavill's Superman. While a script was being written in 2016, the film never saw the light of day... And that's a shame, especially now that we know from the director himself that Clark Kent was supposed to co-star with this superhero.
Man of Steel 2would have seen this alliance between two DC superheroes
After his solo film released in 2013, Superman returned in Batman V Superman in 2016, then in Justice League in 2017, but it never got a sequel properly speaking. In 2018, Henry Cavill and Christopher McQuarrie, the director of a large part of the films in the Mission Impossible franchise, submitted to Warner Bros. a story idea for Man of Steel 2. At the time, however, the studios didn't want to take the project any further, and that's a shame for DC fans: in fact, the superhero was supposed to share the bill with Green Lantern! During an interview for the website Happy Sad Confused, the filmmaker revealed that he had even found an original way to show his power on screen, and that he would have formed a great duo with Superman.
It was Green Lantern who stood out to me, and Green Lantern is a difficult character. His power is a real challenge, but I had managed to figure it out, and it was fun to see how to use that power, and give it a loophole, so it's not purely invincible. The whole concept of Green Lantern is that the ring has to be recharged. And that's not a bug. It's a feature. That's what makes it unique. Yes, you have infinite power, but you only have a limited battery life and that can run out at inopportune times. For me, that solved the whole problem with Green Lantern... the costume is something else. [...] Henry had an idea about it, and I suddenly realized that these two characters had amazing similarities, which also allowed for an amazing conflict, and a resolution that expanded the universe. Man of Steel 2, the Green Lantern/Superman duo we'll never see As Christopher McQuarrie explains above, his draft script included a conflict between the two superheroes, the resolution of which meant an alliance against a common enemy. It's not uncommon for either DC or Marvel to pit two vigilantes (or two teams of vigilantes) against each other, whether over misunderstandings or differing opinions. After coming to blows, usually over a misunderstanding ("Is he on my side?"), Superman and Green Lantern would have formed a cosmic duo of unrivaled power. The film's goal was also to expand the DCEU—perhaps by introducing other Green Lanterns?—which, presumably, would have paved the way for a post-Justice League spinoff film about the Green Lantern Corps. Plus, discovering the similarities between Clark Kent and one of the Green Ring wielders (Hal Jordan?) would have been captivating. James Gunn's vision of the relationship between the two characters will be visible this summer in his Superman!
