In the space of a month, Electronic Arts has laid off several hundred people, closed studios, and canceled numerous projects in development, including Black Panther most recently, as well as a new Titanfall game, apparently. So, as BioWare continues its journey through the wilderness after the new disappointment, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, should we be worried about the fate of Mass Effect 5? In any case, things are likely to seriously change in the future at its publisher. Let's take a closer look at the situation with our Omni-Tool.
Could Mass Effect 5 also be on an ejection seat?
Like a Reaper, Electronic Arts has been seriously cleaning up its ranks lately. After the very disappointing figures estimated by its publisher for The Veilguard, BioWare paid the price, with some of its developers being relocated to other projects like Battlefield 6. However, production on Mass Effect 5 seemed to be quietly continuing, with a potential release date in 2028/2029. To everyone's surprise, it was the promising Black Panther game by the talented studio Cliffhanger Games that was shut down this week.
This is another major single-player game, a format that does not seem to be favored by Electronic Arts. Thus, despite many signs to the contrary, we can legitimately worry about the fate of other similar titles like Star Wars Jedi 3 or Mass Effect 5. After the Cliffhanger Games disaster, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, also sent a worrying internal email, retrieved by IGN. It states that "the company will focus on a small handful of franchises and place its creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities."
Among these franchises that are clearly growing within EA, Laura Miele cites in particular The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. This is a license that we haven't seen for years with Skate, and a Battle Royale from Respawn Entertainment that has recently been losing momentum. That being said, the publisher intends to continue to massively support major projects such as Star Wars Jedi 3, Mass Effect 5, and Iron Man, currently in development at Motive. In any case, we're keeping our fingers crossed for their future, as well as that of their developers.
