Nioh 3: What do we know about the game?

The State of Play on June 4th was full of announcements. Among them, the very first trailer for a highly anticipated game: Nioh 3. The new game from KOEI TECMO studio showed itself in a video almost two minutes long, giving us a glimpse of its story but also a tiny bit of its gameplay. Team Ninja has outdone itself again with this new opus that opens the gates of hell wide open for us.

The first trailer unveiled during the event makes things clear: Nioh 3 doesn't intend to reinvent its formula. We see demonic creatures, pyrotechnic effects, and that characteristic mix of fast-paced action and Japanese folklore. The game remains true to its demanding action-RPG DNA. But this time, two major gameplay innovations enrich the experience.

A ninja in an open world

The first is the introduction of a dual-style combat system. This is a feature found in the latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The player can now switch between a Samurai stance, inherited from previous installments, focused on melee and martial arts, and a Ninja stance, focused on quick dodging, movement, and agility. Smoother gameplay, which promises to open up new strategies against the toughest enemies.

The second major change concerns the environment. Gone are the closed and linear zones: Nioh 3 will feature an open-zone structure, according to director Fumihiko Yasuda. This new format will allow for freer exploration and a new way of approaching dangers, which can now lurk in the four corners of villages.

A demo playable now

The good news is that you won't have to wait long before you can try the title. While it's expected in 2026, it already offers a free demo for anyone who wants it, available now. It's available on PS5 and PC until June 18. It's the perfect opportunity to dive back into the fantasy feudal Japan of the franchise and get your hands on this bloody third installment. We imagine that the studio will take into account the initial feedback from players, which has time to refine its recipe before the game's final release.
