The imminent arrival of Wear OS 6 could leave several Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatch models behind. Here are those that would be affected by this bad news.
Today, turning on a Samsung Galaxy Watch lands us on a familiar system, namely Google's Wear OS, or Android for smartwatches. But this wasn't always the case. In their early days, those still called the Samsung Gear S ran on Tizen, developed internally. It's only in 2021 that Wear OS will arrive on the Korean manufacturer's new series of watches: the Galaxy Watch 4. It is of course enhanced with a home-made overlay, currently One UI 7 Watch.
The next update will be Wear OS 6, and it won't be long before it arrives. We already know that Wear OS 6 will bring some very appreciable new features like increased battery life or better use of Always-On mode. If you have a Samsung smartwatch, you'll be able to enjoy all of this in a few weeks normally. Unless you own one of these models, in which case there's room for doubt.
These Galaxy Watch models might not get Wear OS 6
When it rolls out globally, One UI 8 Watch (based on Wear OS 6) will most likely be reserved for the new Galaxy Watch 8 for a while. Then Samsung will offer it to older series starting with the Galaxy Watch 7 and working backwards. In other words: the older your watch, the longer you'll have to wait for the update. Which brings us to the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, the latest on the list.
Released in 2021, these two models are expected to receive 4 years of system updates. Their software support ends in August 2025, so there's a chance Samsung won't even bother rolling out One UI 8 Watch to them. The company hasn't officially commented on the matter yet, so there's still hope. In the best-case scenario, the next update to the Galaxy Watch 4 will be the last, and that's already pretty good.
