This isn't a stripped-down version, but rather the Photoshop experience, redesigned for touchscreens that Adobe is offering to Android device users. The Android app has been completely rewritten and its interface has been reinvented to adapt to the mobile format, making it intuitive and accessible. This work was carried out in close collaboration with the creative community, particularly the new generation of users for whom the smartphone is a preferred creative tool.
According to Shambhavi Kadam, head of Photoshop Mobile at Adobe, the challenge was to make complex Photoshop operations, such as layer management, masking, and object selection, easy to use on mobile. And the beta app for Android promises to meet this challenge by offering a wide range of iconic Photoshop features. In a jumble, we find the essentials such as layer management, masks or blending modes are present to create precise compositions and retouches.
All Photoshop functions are available
The mobile version also includes tools like Tap Select to provide intelligent selection, allowing the user to simply touch an object on the image for it to be automatically detected and selected. Other tools like the Magic Wand or object selection are also available for greater precision. Adobe also integrates the Spot Healing Brush or the Deletion tool to quickly get rid of unwanted elements.
At the heart of Adobe's priorities for many months, artificial intelligence is part of the game with the native integration of Firefly tools to access generative AI creation. The Generative Fill feature allows you to add or replace elements in an image simply by typing a description, opening up immense creative possibilities. Finally, users have access to a library of free Adobe Stock resources to enrich their creations, the firm specifies.
This version offers the option of exporting images as PNG, JPG, or PSD files. It is also interesting to note that cloud synchronization is there to give the possibility of starting a project (PSD file) on your computer or the web and continuing it on your Android smartphone. This fluidity allows for what Adobe calls "open creativity" and the ability to bring your ideas to life at any time, regardless of the medium available.
A complete and completely free version
For now, the Android version is only available in beta, but with a major advantage: all features, including premium functions, are accessible free of charge for a limited time.
Adobe emphasizes that the application will continue to be enriched with new features over time. Android users can now download it for free from the Google Play Store, provided they have a device running Android 11 or higher with a minimum of 6 GB of RAM (8 GB or more is recommended). Built-in tutorials and access to community forums are available to support new users.
Once the beta period is over, a similar model to the iOS version is expected to be implemented. The app will remain free with basic tools, but a subscription will be required to access premium features. Adobe is expected to continue offering its Photoshop Mobile & Web plan, currently priced at €8.99/month or €79.99/year on iOS. Finally, Creative Cloud subscribers will have these features included.
