The PS5's DualSense is getting a feature that's been available on Xbox controllers for a long time.
Good news for DualSense owners. The PS5 controller will soon be updated to receive a very useful feature. So useful, in fact, that it's hard to understand why Sony took so long to roll it out, a feature we should have expected back in 2020 with the release of the console and its new controller model.
"Want to pair your DualSense controller with multiple devices at once? An update planned for later this year improves the pairing functionality. Stay tuned for more details," PlayStation teases on social media. If you regularly switch devices to play and use your DualSense, you'll save a lot of time and forget the frustration of having to reconnect the controller every time you switch from PC to PS5 or vice versa, for example.
The DualSense is catching up with Xbox controllers
For now, it's unclear how Sony will handle the DualSense's multi-device Bluetooth connection. Logically, the controller should connect to the last available device it was used with, but it's not always that simple. And in this case, how do you tell the system that you want to play on another paired device, and not the last one? A trip to the Bluetooth settings? A manipulation directly from the controller to switch from one to the other?
Xbox has paved the way for such a feature for its own controllers. They can be paired with multiple devices, but the possibilities are limited. Pressing the pairing button twice connects the controller to the Xbox console, while holding it down switches to the last other device. There's no way to connect to a third device, though.
And in our experience, things don't always work perfectly. I use an Xbox controller for console, PC, and GeForce Now cloud gaming via an Nvidia Shield. Connecting the controller to the right device isn't always easy, especially between the PC and the Shield, even via Bluetooth. Sometimes you have to forget the controller and pair it again to get things working properly. Let's hope Sony manages to do better.
