It's almost kickoff time. Six months after the release of season 2, Squid Game is already back on Netflix. Its creator didn't have the ambition to continue the journey after Gi-hun's first victory, but the unexpected success of his series and the insistence of the American platform convinced him of the merits of a season 2 and even a season 3. These two rounds were filmed back-to-back, giving Squid Game a dream opportunity to occupy the television space with only a few months of interruption. So, it's on June 27 that Netflix subscribers have a date with the final episodes. The promotional campaign is in full swing, and Netflix is seizing an internet phenomenon to reinvent it and offer a unique glimpse of this conclusion.
Behind the scenes
On YouTube, the platform has just shared a six-minute video called “Backrooms Found Footage”. As its name suggests, it is inspired by a phenomenon that gained momentum on the internet in the late 2010s. The term “backroom” refers to one or more locations accessible by crossing a texture in a video game. These locations are considered parallel dimensions and have been the subject of numerous videos on social media. Squid Game is taking it on board to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look. We thus discover the behind the scenes of an event well known to viewers of season 2: the Carousel.
From then on, the camera, which seems to come from another time, ventures to where the guards hide during the events. The control room and especially a new arena with new mascots, the teaser confirms that the island where Gi-hun and his friends are located has not revealed all its secrets. It would seem that another competition is taking place in parallel. As a reminder, this giant doll appeared in the post-credit scene of season 2. Note that this is not the first time that the red N offers such content, a similar video was shared last December for the release of season 2. It contained some clues about what the future held for the characters. Moreover, the video published this June is a direct sequel to the previous one.
The end for Gi-Hun?
Season 3 of Squid Game should begin exactly where Season 2 ended. Back in the arena, Gi-Hun had every intention of putting his knowledge of the game and its mechanics to good use. His goal was clear: save as many players as possible and encourage them to give up the reward. He didn't succeed, as the call of the greenbacks was too strong. However, the player had managed to gather a few rebels to try to get out of this predicament. But his hopes were dashed when Front Man, hiding behind the number 1, thwarted his plans. Gi-Hun survived, but not his companions, including his best friend. Will the character played by Jung jae Lee let himself die? Does he still have a chance to overthrow the Front Man and his henchmen? Who are the mysterious masked men watching and betting on this competition? Season 3 has six short episodes to answer all these questions.
