Star Wars: The 5 games currently in development that we're eagerly awaiting

While Lucasfilm Games has signed several partnerships with third-party publishers to develop Star Wars games and bring the franchise to life in the video game universe, here's a quick refresher on the projects currently in development, for those who got lost along the way.

5 Star Wars games currently in development

After a postology that laid the foundations of the Star Wars era under Disney, then a multitude of series developed, the license is preparing to move up a gear with a new trilogy centered on Rey and her Jedi heritage, the films of Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy, James Mangold, as well as those of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, the fathers of The Mandalorian, who will both reenact the bounty hunter and his faithful sidekick Grogu. And what about video games? After the resounding failure of Ubisoft's Star Wars: Outlaws, Lucasfilm Games hopes to console players with new, attractive projects. This is fortunate, as no fewer than five games are currently in development with third-party publishers, with whom Lucasfilm has reached an agreement since the end of EA's exclusivity. It's been a while since we've heard from Star Wars Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game developed by Bit Reactor in collaboration with Respawn Entertainment. But the latest Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo has undoubtedly reassured XCOM fans with a 2-minute trailer unveiled. No in-game images, but some useful information on the story and gameplay. Players will embody a former Republic officer in the midst of the Clone Wars with a whole squad of eclectic characters with varied talents. The group will have to face an invisible threat. A customizable team with exchangeable members and the possibility of improving the main character. However, we will have to be patient before we can launch it on our home consoles. A 2026 release is likely, but not certain.

#4 Action-adventure game developed by Skydance, still unrevealed

Star Wars: The 5 games currently in development that we're eagerly awaiting

Very little is known about this Star Wars game being developed by Skydance New Media, except that it will take the form of a narrative action-adventure game and that it is being led by Amy Hennig, the writer at the head of the studio who notably worked on the Uncharted and Jak and Daxter licenses. A project in good hands, then, which could, according to rumors, be a revival of Project Ragtag - or at least its mechanics - a game abandoned in 2017 already carried at the time by Amy Hennig. If this is the case, the next Skydance title should take us to the heart of the Rebel Alliance, right between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Let's still remain cautious about this information which has never been confirmed, neither by Skydance nor by Lucasfilm Games.

#3 Star Wars Jedi 3

Given the sales figures for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Survivor, a conclusion to the adventures of Cal Kestis seemed like a no-brainer. In September 2024, Electronic Arts and Respawn officially announced the start of work on a "Star Wars Jedi 3," again starring actor Cameron Monaghan as the young Jedi. But this time, without Stig Asmussen, director of the first two installments, who left to form Giant Skull Studios. This departure could delay development on the title, which is already not expected until 2027. Another downside is the waves of layoffs and studio closures that have been affecting Electronic Arts since 2023. We had a new example of this with the closure of Cliffhanger Games this week, which led to the cancellation of Black Panther. We hope that Respawn and its teams will not suffer the same fate. There is still reason to be optimistic, though: Star Wars Jedi 3 would be part of the foundations of EA's new direction, if we refer to the recent words of president Laura Miele.

#2 Star Wars Eclipse

Exit the periods of the Galactic Empire, the Rebellion, or the Clone Wars. Star Wars Eclipse will plant the flag 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, in the era of the High Republic (a period that was depicted in the controversial series Star Wars: The Acolyte). There were fears that Quantic Dream, behind the project, would suffer the consequences of the restructuring of NetEase (which bought the studio), or a delay, or even, for the most pessimistic, the outright closure of the studio. But CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière confirmed that the game was still in active development and was protected from the problems facing the parent company. In development for four years now, and fueled by Unreal Engine 5, Star Wars Eclipse should soon be making headlines again, after its beautiful trailer which dates back three years.

#1 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake

Star Wars: The 5 games currently in development that we're eagerly awaiting

Where is the remake of Knights of the Old Republic, aka KOTOR, one of the most popular Star Wars games? Since its announcement in 2021, the problems have been piling up. Developer Aspyr has given way to Saber Interactive, before an original trailer was deleted from YouTube, sowing confusion among fans of the franchise. Behind this, the lack of information led to fears of the worst. But Saber director Tim Willits came to the rescue of the project by affirming that it was still in development. While a cancellation is therefore not on the agenda, there is no reason to be confident about this remake, for which we are sorely lacking reassuring information.
