The iPhone 17 could well have three times faster wireless charging thanks to this new standard

Apple is preparing a discreet but significant upgrade for its next iPhones. A new MagSafe charger has been spotted in an official database. It heralds a big leap in charging power.

The iPhone 17 could be the first Apple smartphone to benefit from the new Qi 2.2 standard. A certification spotted on the NCC website in Taiwan by the media 91mobiles mentions two new MagSafe chargers. They retain the circular design with braided cables of one or two meters. These accessories would be compatible with the Qi 2.2 standard, an evolution of the wireless charging protocol managed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).

The Qi 2.2 standard allows for theoretical charging of up to 50W, more than triple the 15W offered with Qi 2.0. The iPhone 16 can currently reach 25W with an optimized MagSafe charger, but Apple has never officially adopted Qi 2.1, even though it is already in circulation. The arrival of the Qi 2.2 standard, with integrated magnets and better energy efficiency, could mark a real turning point. This increase in power could also significantly shorten charging times.

The iPhone 17 would be the first Apple model compatible with the Qi 2.2 wireless charging standard

Apple has not yet confirmed the compatibility of the next iPhone with Qi 2.2, but the appearance of these new chargers in an official base strongly reinforces this hypothesis. The documents indicate compatibility with iPhones ranging from 11 to 16, but speeds would be limited without a dedicated chip. To benefit from 50W, the smartphone will have to integrate an advanced power management chip, like those used by Samsung in its high-end models. This expanded support shows that the Apple brand is preparing a smooth transition to this new standard.

This positioning contrasts with that of Samsung. The future Galaxy Z Fold 7, although Qi2 certified, will not offer native magnetic charging. You will need to use a compatible case to benefit from magnetic alignment. Apple could therefore maintain a lead in ease of use, thanks to its full integration of MagSafe. If Qi 2.2 support is confirmed, the iPhone 17 will mark a major milestone after several years without significant improvements in wireless charging.
