After a first presentation of The Witcher 4 at the Game Awards 2024 which caused a sensation, the next title from CD Projekt RED was one of the guests of honor at the State of Unreal 2025, the conference focused on Unreal Engine 5. This aims to show the future evolutions of the famous Epic Games engine, just a few days before the Summer Game Fest 2025. As a reminder, the new saga centered on Ciri must be a standard-bearer to develop the capabilities of UE 5 to display open worlds in a way that is as beautiful as it is fluid, and this presentation proves it again.
The Witcher 4 shows off its new techniques on Unreal Engine 5
Last month, Unreal Engine 5 offered a preview of its upcoming version 5.6. Among its new features were "vast, high-fidelity open worlds with maximum performance at a constant 60 FPS," the ability to create them faster, and the in-engine addition of Meta Human, the engine's impressive character creator. When it comes to new open world features, The Witcher 4 is the perfect candidate to demonstrate this.
CD Projekt RED took the stage at State of Unreal 2025 to show us all this in more detail. Ahead of the conference, the Polish studio had indeed indicated that it would treat us to a presentation to highlight the innovative technologies and features of Unreal Engine 5 that will power The Witcher 4 in particular. You can see the result via the video below, and the least we can say is that it is very pleasant to the retina.
The presentation began with a convoy being attacked by a monster, before Ciri sets off on its trail accompanied by her faithful steed Kelpie. After a transition from cinematic to gameplay that clearly makes your mouth water, CD Projekt announced the color: the gameplay demo runs on a standard PS5 at 60 FPS with raytracing. As a technical presentation obliges, the studio highlighted the technology, in particular the game world, which is intended to be alive and which should adapt to our actions. The ambition is clear: to create the most immersive open world in the franchise, and this will be an opportunity for players to discover the Kovir region for the first time.
This certainly looks very promising on a technical and visual level. Naturally, visuals aren't everything, and we're keeping an eye on The Witcher 4 for what has always been CD Projekt RED's strength: storytelling and writing. However, patience will be required for this, as the title isn't expected to be released until 2027/2028 at the earliest.
