Apple is finally introducing a long-requested feature in its connected cars. With iOS 26, video playback becomes possible on the CarPlay screen. But be careful: this option will be strictly limited to one condition.
Apple has just presented iOS 26, the new version of the iPhone operating system. This major update, announced at WWDC 2025, introduces a brand new design called Liquid Glass. This style, inspired by the Vision Pro headset interface, transforms the appearance of iOS with transparency effects, raised icons, and dynamic animations. In addition to this visual makeover, the company is also adding new features, particularly on the car side.
iOS 26 allows for the first time to watch videos on a vehicle's central screen via CarPlay. Thanks to AirPlay, users can stream video content directly from their iPhone to the car's screen. However, this playback will only be allowed if the car is stationary. A measure imposed by Apple to avoid any distraction while driving. The feature is therefore only intended for breaks, such as when recharging or during a prolonged stop.
Video playback on CarPlay via iOS 26 only works if the vehicle is parked
This is in addition to other tools intended for manufacturers such as digital keys or dedicated apps. For the feature to be activated, car manufacturers must make their systems compatible with AirPlay video. This means that it will not be accessible in all vehicles. To date, only Aston Martin has officially announced its support for CarPlay Ultra, the most advanced version of the system.
This approach aligns with what several manufacturers already offer. Tesla, for example, allows you to watch videos while stationary via its Theater mode. Other vehicles, particularly those running Android Automotive, integrate apps like YouTube directly into their systems. Until now, Apple users had to resort to unofficial solutions or adapters to display videos on CarPlay. With iOS 26, the Apple brand is finally providing a secure framework for this possibility. This is a discreet but expected addition that brings the iPhone a little closer to the onboard ecosystem of modern vehicles.
